THE COLOR OF HOME
January 28, 2022
Have you ever debated for weeks, maybe even months on end, on what color to paint the living room? Have you almost reached divorce status with your spouse trying to agree on a color for your main bedroom? It’s a common problem. We’re here to help quell those fears and questions with a few helpful hints on choosing colors.
Start with what you love and create a color scheme. You can’t go wrong surrounding yourself with something you love and you can develop a pleasing palette for your entire home.
Finding your inspiration is a great place to begin. You can pull colors from a piece of art that speaks to your soul, an ad in a magazine that seems to jump off the page, a beautiful piece of cherished fabric or even a photograph you took while on a favorite vacation. From each of these items, colors that give you joy will stand out. The color of the ocean, the background color of your bedspread, the swipe of bold color that crosses your living room art…. all of these are jumping off spots in closing a home color palette.
You may not want to paint every wall the glistening turquoise color of the water from your Caribbean vacation, but you can pull accents of those colors into the room. You can make it a neutral by tinting a lighter paint to echo that color and bring it subtly on the walls.
Neutral doesn’t have to mean beige or white or even grey. Think of how you wear jeans. Denim is a neutral. You don’t think twice about putting any color with your denim or even any pattern. A neutral can be any color ( and sometimes a pattern) that you can pair with anything. How about army green? A shade of this green (which is very on trend for 2022) is a perfect example of a neutral. This homage to the outdoors allows you to pair any color or pattern in your home with a color outside of beige. As you move through each room in your home, you can use shades of this same color to bring cohesion throughout. Paint your bathroom a darker shade of the army green and lighten it up for your public areas. By using the same color, you home will have a sense of continuity and peace.
To ensure you make the right color choice, sample, sample, sample! Always bring samples of the color you have chosen for your home into your space. Get a sample can of paint and paint a swatch on your walls. The ambient lighting within your home, the natural light filtering in from the windows, the wood tones you have and even how the shadows fall in your home will affect how the color reads. Painting this sample will give you a true feel for how your choice will speak to your home.
