Are you looking to begin working with someone to help you with your home, office or business? Do you know who you should be asking for help? Do you choose an individual or a firm and whois best to aid you with your needs? Here’s a few job titles with descriptions to help you know where to begin.
Interior designers, interior decorators, individuals, design firms, merchandisers all play unique rolls in the area of interior design.Who do you need to help you?
Junior interior designers usually work under a senior interior designer and learn from their peer’s experience. The mentorship allows the junior to gain knowledge and absorb the finer details of business, client relationship and technical skills.A junior designer will be responsible for creating floor plans, choosing furniture and fixtures, client communication and vendor interaction.
Interior design assistants are integral to any design business.They are administrative support. This role is key to organization and scheduling. Although a degree in the field is not required for this role, experience in the field is helpful. Design assistants schedule meetings, deliveries and installations, manage and organize documents, correspond with clients and other professionals in the industry
Interior decorators use their talents to create a look and feel fora space. Technical matters of design and architecture are not utilized in this role. Many times a decorator does not have an architectural or design related degree. They use their unique set of talents for furniture selection, color choices, and art and fixture decisions.
Interior designers use their credentials, knowledge and experiences to make spaces safe, functional while being aesthetically pleasing. They may work individually or with a firm.Their years of experience often determine their job scope and type of design they focus on; residential, commercial or hospitality.
Visual merchandiser may seem like an unexpected title. While this may make you think only of retail spaces, many design businesses use a visual merchandiser to develop and communicate visual concepts of a project. This can be interpreted in assembly of displays whether in residential, retail or office spaces.
Space planners develop the functionality of a space. This may mean installation of furniture for a corporate facility in a new building or reuse of existing furniture and fixtures to a new property. Or…. A space planner may help a client reutilize their home furnishings in new ways. They understand proportion and have a firm grasp on all rules and regulations of design and architecture.
Senior interior designers may also be known as executive director of interior design and are heads of a business. They lead projects and direct teams. Their duties include but aren’t limited to analyzing budgets, overseeing presentations, ensuring technical aspects of projects to meet code or client expectations. Senior designers often have seven plus years of experience and have worked their way up through the ranks.Their expertise is respected and tapped by those lower in the design hierarchy.
