Would You Ever Do This?

August 30, 2024

Decorating your home is an expression of your personality, and for some, that means taking a walk on the wild side of design. Have you ever walked into a space and just thought “what in the world were they thinking?” While most of us aim for comfort, beauty, and maybe a touch of elegance, others boldly dive into trends that can only bed escribed as downright weird. Let's talk about some of these bizarre decorating trends that have popped up over the years and left us wondering, "What were they thinking?"

1. Decorated Refrigerators

I’m not talking about the ‘outside’ of your appliance, but actually staging the inside of a refrigerator to be pretty. We all like to use the outside of our fridge to put up reminders, kids artwork and souvenir magnets , but the inside…. Really? A fridgescape is a current trend. It’s the act and art of styling one’s refrigerator contents. Flowers in vases, small framed artwork, pretty plates of face care products all next to your condiments and produce. Who has that kind of time!

2. Taxidermy Decor

Walking into a room and seeing a stuffed bear in the corner or a mounted deer head above the fireplace might give some people the creeps. But for others, taxidermy is a bold statement piece that adds a rustic or even luxurious vibe to a room. This trend has seen a resurgence in recent years, with people using everything from small birds to full sized mammals as decor. While it can be fascinating to see animals preserved in such away, the idea of having dead animals as part of your living space is definitely an acquired taste. And we do live in the land of hunters… from time to time a deer head may show up in our decor.

13. Shag Carpeting on Walls

Shag carpeting on the floor? Sure is a classic throwback to the 70s. But shag carpeting on the walls? That's a whole other level of strange. This trend likely originated from the desire to add texture and warmth to a room. However, covering walls in thick, fluffy carpeting can make your space feel like a giant teddy bear’s den. It’s quirky, it’s soft, and it’s also a nightmare to clean. Dust, pet hair, and who knows what else can get trapped in that fuzzy wall covering.

4. Bathtubs in the Bedroom

Imagine waking up in the morning, stretching, and then walking just a few steps to sink into a nice, warm bath without ever leaving your bedroom. Sounds luxurious, right? But having a bathtub in the middle of your sleeping space is a trend that leaves many people puzzled. While it may be convenient for a late-night soak, the practicality of this setup is questionable. Not to mention, the potential for moisture issues in a room designed for sleeping rather than bathing.

5. Astroturf Indoors

Bringing a bit of the outdoors inside can be refreshing, but covering your floors with Astroturf? That's an entirely different ballgame. Originally intended for sports fields, Astroturf has found its way into some homes as a quirky floor covering. It's easy to clean, sure, but walking around on fake grass indoors can feel a bit off. Plus, the bright green color might clash with just about any other decor you have.

6. Inflatable Furniture

Inflatable furniture is one of those trends that you either love or hate. Barbie had it, did you? Popular in the 90s, it made a brief comeback recently. While it’s lightweight and easy to move, inflatable furniture lacks the comfort and durability of traditional pieces. Plus, there's always the risk of a puncture turning your stylish chair into a sad, deflated mess.

Embracing the Weird

These trends may not be for everyone, but they highlight the creativity and individuality that decorating can bring out. If you're brave enough to try them, more power to you! After all, your home should be a reflection of you even if that means covering your walls in shag carpeting or relaxing in an inflatable chair. Just be prepared for some raised eyebrows when guests come to visit.
